E-Professionalism and Social Media Policy

Digital communication and social media platforms, including but not limited to email, blogs, websites, and platforms such as Instagram®, Facebook®, LinkedIn®, Snapchat®, and other online networks, are considered extensions of professional identity. Students enrolled at LMU-CDM are expected to demonstrate professionalism in all online and electronic environments, consistent with expectations in academic, clinical, and community settings. LMU-CDM Dental and Dental Hygiene students must adhere to the LMU Social Media Policy as described here.

Students are expected to:

  • Exercise sound judgment and professionalism in all online communication
  • Demonstrate respect toward peers, faculty, staff, patients, and the public
  • Protect patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and institutional policies
  • Maintain a professional digital presence consistent with the standards of the dental profession

Students must not engage in conduct that is:

  • Malicious, threatening, or harassing
  • Obscene or inappropriate
  • Misleading or damaging to the reputation of individuals, LMU-CDM, or the profession

Unprofessional online behavior may result in:

  • Referral to the appropriate University disciplinary body
  • Additional academic or professional consequences

Students who record in laboratory or clinical settings must avoid capturing images, audio, or video of other students, faculty, or staff without prior consent. Any recording originating from LMU-CDM facilities that is intended for posting on social media or public platforms requires prior approval from the Associate Dean for Faculty and Students. Failure to comply with this policy may result in disciplinary action.
